Common questions

How do I get started?

Tap + on the main screen to create a dictionary and name its two languages. Open it, tap + to add word pairs, then tap the play button to practise: flip the card and tap "Knew it" or "Didn't know".

What do the tally marks mean?

Every word has one set of marks for each direction. A right answer adds a stroke, a miss rubs one out, and five strokes mean the word is learned in that direction. A word counts as fully learned once it has five strokes both ways. The Statistics screen (in the … menu of a dictionary) shows it direction by direction.

How do I import words?

Tap the import icon on the main screen and choose a .folio.json, .csv or .tsv file. CSV and TSV files need two columns, such as word, translation. A header row with names like word, translation, front, back, term, definition, side1 or side2 is recognised. A preview shows exactly what will be added before anything changes — check that the two language columns were detected correctly.

How do I back up a dictionary or move it to another device?

Open the dictionary, tap the … menu, choose Export Dictionary and save the file wherever you like. On the other device, import that .folio.json file.

How do I delete a dictionary or a word?

On the main screen, press and hold a dictionary's note and choose Delete. Inside a dictionary, press and hold a word and choose Delete — or Reset Progress, which sets both directions back to zero.

How do I change the app language?

Folio Words follows the language you choose for it in iOS Settings → Folio Words → Language (English, German or Russian). The globe icon on the main screen explains this and opens that page.

Is my data sold or tracked?

No. Folio Words has no account, no ads and no analytics, and it does not use the network. Everything stays on your device. See the Privacy Policy.
